Adventure South |
Christchurch-based Adventure South is the first activity-based operator to achieve carbon neutral certification in New Zealand. The company's commitment goes back to 2001 when it was the very first participant in the carboNZero programme. The tourism industry is serious about its commitment to the environment and achieving carboNZero certification is a reflection of our company’s values. The company operates low impact cycle and hiking programmes nationwide, but it is the company's fleet of 12 vehicles and trailers that has raised the issue of our carbon footprint. 'While we feel great about delivering a healthy lifestyle product for our clients, we can’t escape the cumulative impact of our business. The actions to achieve certification have been driven from within the company, and we are increasingly noticing that our clients expect evidence of environmental commitment. Our clients are sophisticated discerning travellers and they look for something that is based on a rigorous review process. The carboNZero certification process involved a thorough audit that examined our claims and processes. From here on we will continue to review our processes, monitor our fuel consumption and upgrade and adapt the vehicle fleet we own. Only after we have done everything we can to reduce our energy consumption do we pay to support renewable energy programmes. While getting started is often the hardest thing, it’s important to find a single starting point and following the trail onwards from there. It doesn’t have to be huge, but it has to be a start.'

Cape Campbell Wines Ltd (trading as Brown Family Vineyards) |
Brown Family Vineyards produces wine under a family of brands linked either through a coastal theme Cape Campbell (after the landmark lighthouse), Lobster Reef (after the rock lobsters that live along the Marlborough coastline) or to the local terroir with Cable Station Road named after the road next door to the Cable Station Road vineyard. The winery is family-owned and Murray and Daphne Brown are viticulture pioneers in Marlborough since 1980. In 1992 they established their own wine label with Cairnbrae in the heart of Rapaura Road area next door to Cloudy Bay. The Brown Family’s vineyards are planted in the Blind River area of Southern Marlborough. Within the vineyards there is a nine acre lake where local flora and fauna live, this lake supplies water to the vineyards as required. Brown Family Vineyards produce its wine according to the criteria of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ). Sustainability is the way of the future and the company is committed to producing quality wine with as minimal effect as possible on the environment. They believe that the more wineries that become carboNZeroCertTM certified, the more the wine industry can support each other toward a carbon neutral future.

Digiweb |
Digiweb was established over 10 years ago to provide a range of specialist data storage and management solutions for businesses throughout New Zealand. The company provides private server systems for a number of national companies and organisations, as well as web-hosting and e-commerce solutions for thousands of businesses. Digiweb’s move toward carboNZero certification was initiated by managing director, Brendan McNeill. Mr McNeill’s commitment was born of a personal desire to see his company operating in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. Leading the way Digiweb is the first datacenter in New Zealand to gain carboNZero certification. The company took the first step towards certification by identifying significant GHG emission sources and implementing a reduction plan, which set targets and specific actions to reduce those emissions. Electricity, diesel and long haul airfreight were identified as the highest sources of emissions for the company, and will be the focus of reduction efforts. Digiweb has already proven its commitment to reducing emissions, by switching to a carboNZero certified energy provider at the end of last year. The change of provider means that electricity used by Digiweb has already been offset; however Digiweb will still seek to reduce their use of electricity. Digiweb has also reduced its paper trail by changing the way it invoices its customers. Instead of posting invoices, customers now receive emailed versions – reducing the company’s printing and postage by over 90 percent. General Manager, Ian Falconer believes that “The strategies we have put in place will not only make our operation more efficient, they signify our commitment to maintaining sustainable practices.”

Faculty of Architecture and Design (Victoria University of Wellington) |
Victoria University’s Faculty of Architecture and Design is a highly regarded architecture and design tertiary institution with award winning students and academics, and leading educational and research programmes. The Faculty produces and delivers high quality research and education that encompasses sustainability and has a high proportion of academic staff with expertise in a wide range of sustainability related areas. Going through the carboNZero programme is part of the Faculty’s commitment to putting that education and research into practical action. The global built environment contributes significantly to the causes of climate change through construction and demolition practices, but most significantly through operations and maintenance. Built environment professionals and designers will have to address reducing these emissions in the future as well as find strategies for enabling the built environment to adapt to many of the changes that will come about through climate change. It is appropriate then that Victoria University’s Faculty of Architecture and Design is the world’s first schools of Architecture and Design become certified carbon neutral. The Faculty of Architecture and Design obtained, through a sponsorship agreement, international gold standard carbon credits to offset its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, from Meridian Energy's wind farm projects in New Zealand. This is a pilot for the rest of Victoria University of Wellington in assessing future GHG emissions reduction planning.

Trilogy Products |
Trilogy Products was created in 2002, based on the benefits of organics rosehip oil and the principles of simplicity and purity. The Wellington company is an internationally successful brand and is the first skincare company in New Zealand to achieve carboNZero certification. Trilogy founders Catherine de Groot and Sarah Gibbs say public awareness of the fragility of the environment means that their customers, especially those in Europe and North America are demanding more sustainable choices: 'The carboNZero programme helped us to operate more closely to our sustainability mantra: maximum effect on the skin, minimum effect on the environment. Participating in the programme is an investment in the future sustainability of our products and our business.' The carboNZero certification was achieved following a process administered by Landcare Research and included the measurement of emissions resulting from the production, distribution, marketing and selling of Trilogy products, air and sea freight, travel, fuel cost and electricity and natural gas usage. Following this Trilogy had to demonstrate a commitment to reduce emissions and the purchase and cancellation of approved credits. 'Trilogy is not just about natural ingredients,' says Catherine de Groot, 'but about a commitment to environment and lifestyle.'
